Samurai Armour No 5 - Early Edo period
Dō-maru type armour - honkozane (true/real little scales) cuirass, braided with lacing pattern in shades of green and indigo.
Mask: Tetsu kuro urushi nuri happuri
Maedate: Kachimushi
Cuirass/Dō: This finely constructed dō-maru cuirass (dō) and large shoulder guards (ō-sode) are crafted in the honkozane style — the traditional method using individual small iron and leather scales laced together with silk cords (odoshi). The intricate lacing pattern in shades of green and indigo, complemented by gilt metal fittings, reflects the high level of craftsmanship typical of the Early Edo period.
The dō, composed of multiple lacquered scales, provides both flexibility and protection, while the broad ō-sode offer additional defence for the shoulders and upper arms. Their elegant curvature and refined lacquer finish exemplify the balance between functionality and aesthetic harmony central to Samurai armour
design
Green symbolised life, balance, youth, and serenity — qualities admired in a warrior who could maintain harmony even amidst the chaos of battle.
