Samurai Armour No 6 - Edo period
Gusoku-type armour with two-part cuirass with brawn-lacquered plating, braided with blue thread.
Helmet: Tetsu sabiji hoshi bachi (San-jū-ni) 32-Ken kabuto – Signed by Yamato Yoshitsugu, Bishū Province
A traditional samurai hoshikabuto helmet made of 32 iron plates, each riveted with
decorative “stars” (hoshi). Finished in tetsusabiji style – oxidized iron with a raw appearance. Signed by the master armorer Yamato Yoshitsugu of the Owari region. Adorned with a matsukawabishi crest and a five-tiered shikoro (neck guard) made of lacquered kozane plates laced with indigo silk. A rare and valuable artefact of early Edo period Japanese craftsmanship.
The matsukawabishi motif was used by many samurai clans. It symbolises
strength, resilience, and loyalty, as the bark of the pine tree (matsu) does not
decay even under harsh conditions.
Mask: Tetsu kuro urushi nuri menpo with kiritsuke kozane yodare-kake (throat guard) laced with blue odoshi.
Maedate: Crescent-shape maedate with kachimushi
Cuirass/Dō: Tetsu kuro urushi nuri / Tosei Ni-maido gusoku, kusazuri and sode kiritsuke kozane,
Sangu: (Kote, haidate, suneate) with dragonflies motif
