Samurai Helmet - Kabuto No 3
Tetsu sabiji (roku-jū-ni) ken 62- ken suji bachi kabuto – Signed by Nagahisa, Kaei 1848-1854 - Late Edo period
An outstanding example of a late Edo sujikabuto samurai helmet, constructed from 62 heavy iron plates (ken) in tetsusabiji (russet finish). Signed by the armorer Nagahisa, active during the Kaei era (1848 - 1854). The helmet retains its original interior lining and leather-cut section revealing the signature.
Key features include: A gold-lacquered wooden dragonfly maedate, with minor old repairs; Shikoro: three wide lames with prominent fukigaeshi partially leather-covered and bearing family crests Agari-fuji – (rising wisteria) used by Fujiwara clan; Haraidate (crest holder) with hirame double holes, in the style of Myōchin Nobuiye; Four shiten-no-byo rivets and hibiki-no-ana holes for decorative cords (hasa).
