Samurai Jinbaori and Jingasa

Samurai battle jacket: Jinbaori with “Taka no Ha” clan crest and with kachimushi - dragonfly motif - Edo period

Jinbaori was worn over the armour. There was a wide range of varieties and colours. This is a silk jinbaori with a textured weave and subtle gradient dyeing. The lower section features embroidered dragonflies — emblems of courage and tenacity, highly regarded in Samurai iconography.

Prominently displayed on the back is the Asano clan crest (kamon) showing two crossed falcon feathers (Taka no Ha), enclosed in a black circular frame. The falcon feather symbolises speed, precision, and noble bearing.

Hat: Jingasa with kachimushi motif and “Mitsuba Aoi” - Tokugawa Ieyasu clan crest

Very beautiful jingasa (Samurai hat) from the Edo period.
The jingasa (lit. “camp hat”) was a type of hat worn by Japanese warriors when traveling or camping. This jingasa, due to its decoration and quality, indicates that it is a Samurai and not Ashigaru (foot soldiers in feudal Japan who served under Samurai during the Sengoku and Edo periods) jingasa.
